DESCRIPTION
Commissioned by the Festival Medieval d’Elx, MATER is inspired by Lo passi en cobles by Bernat Fenollar (15th century, the Valencian Golden Age). It reimagines the Passion of Christ through the anguished gaze of the Mother.
The sacrifice of the son—her most sacred offering—becomes an act of redemption for other sorrows and other sins. Through dance, grief is transformed into ritual and transcendence, merging the symbolic, the spiritual, and the profoundly human.
MATER offers an intimate vision of devotion and loss, portraying bodies engaged in gestures of faith and offerings of redemption. Mary contemplates her son, perceiving him motionless and serene; she extends her hand—pale, trembling—while he accepts the destiny of man he is about to leave behind.
The soundscape is a journey through Mediterranean mysticism—at times atmospheric and ethereal, at others rhythmic or vocal—woven together to evoke both tenderness and torment. Lighting by Juanjo Llorens bathes the stage in shifting intensities, from celestial haze to piercing clarity.
Costumes by La Cantante Calva evoke a fusion between Palestine and the allegorical iconography of medieval Europe. The set, designed by Luis Crespo, frames the piece as a living altarpiece—tall veils of fabric forming a cathedral-like space where a central window breathes in unison with the unfolding of the work. -
