JUANA Commissioned by the Festival Medieval d’Elx for its 19th edition, Juana expands on the short piece Joanna—originally created for the Chicago-based company Luna Negra Dance Theater—to develop a full-length production premiered at Elche’s Palacio de Altamira.
A story of passion, death, pain, and madness, Juana is inspired by the dramatic life of Joanna I of Castile, known as Juana la Loca, the woman who could have become Spain’s first queen—and perhaps the most powerful woman in the world.
Trapped between dynastic power and an obsessive love for her husband—who both seduces and mistreats her—Juana ends her days confined and alone, imprisoned within the chaos of her own mind.
Nominated for the Max Awards 2016 for Best Dance Performance and Best Male Performer (Sebastián Rowinsky).
