DESCRIPTION
Movement, light, vibration, and dynamism are the core elements in the work of Eusebi Sempere, a key figure in shaping Spain’s artistic modernity during the second half of the 20th century. As part of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante’s initiative to commemorate the centenary of his birth, Asun Noales meticulously and delicately explores the tridimensionality of bodies in space, the use of light, and the pursuit of a kinetic and optically captivating approach to scenic plasticity.

Volume, plasticity, repetition, rhythm, musicality, and poetry converge in this abstract journey, where Sempere’s visual universe becomes a movement score that inspires the composition of the scenes.
SEMPERE is a production by the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante, Alicante City Council, Teatro Principal de Alicante, and the OtraDanza Company, with an artistic residency at CCC L’Escorxador d’Elx. Celebrating the centenary of Eusebi Sempere, a pioneer of optical and kinetic art in Spain, OtraDanza delves into his work as the primary source of inspiration for this creation. Asun Noales translates his aesthetic, spatial, and luminous concepts into the physical and poetic language of her choreographic creations.
The piece stands on a solid academic and research-based foundation, drawing from the MACA archives to investigate the conceptual, compositional, visual, and poetic development of Sempere’s oeuvre. Selected artworks serve as movement scores, becoming the seed for choreographic composition. Noales traverses Sempere’s art, transforming its visual essence into the scenic realm. Throughout the piece, we find her reinterpretation of his work with light, rhythm, repetition, layering, and the moiré effect. These characteristics merge seamlessly with movement, composition, and staging, resulting in a clean, subtle, and mathematical proposal.Eusebi Sempere is one of Spain’s most celebrated visual artists, and the heart of his poetic vision lies in kinetic art, which flourished in the early 20th century. This creation embodies a choreographic rewriting of his work, imagining how dance enters his minimalist painting and sculpture through the interplay of body, light, space, and sound. The piece intertwines several artistic vocabularies — contemporary dance, instant composition, and performance art — to materialize the visual memory of Sempere’s paintings and sculptures on stage.
SEMPERE transforms dance into the activator of a kinetic, visual, and spatial experience.
By combining the dynamism of aesthetic forms with rhythmic structures and scenic plasticity, enhanced through intricate light design, the work proposes a clean, refined, and mathematically precise staging. It also reflects on Valencian cultural heritage while promoting new artistic productions inspired by Spanish contemporary art, offering fresh perspectives and reinterpretations of Sempere’s legacy through multiple disciplines and contributing to the innovative evolution of Valencian performing arts.
Additionally, SEMPERE has been selected to join the Danza a Escena 2025 Circuit, further expanding its presence on the national stage.
